Crystal Covered Cell Phones are a Hollywood Hit

More than just a communication device, cell phones have become a fashion statement and a form of self-expression.

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB via PRWeb) February 21, 2006 -- From Sarah Jessica Parker to Sean "Puffy" Combs, celebrities are getting glam with Swarovski crystal covered cell phones. While hiring a designer to decorate a cell phone can come at a high cost, those people who are not on the celebrity A-list can now get the look for less. Los Angeles based BlingMeOut.com offers do-it-yourself Swarovski "bling kits" that come with everything needed to go from bland to bling. "We realize that people want the high quality offered by Swarovski crystals, but not the high price and limitations that come with design services", says Susan Ohtake, owner of BlingMeOut.com.

The beauty of the kit is the flexibility to customize it. "By offering several kit sizes and many crystal color choices, we can meet virtually anyones design needs", says Ohtake. Not an artist? Not a problem. Design patterns, ideas, and instructions can be found online at www.blingmeout.com.

What if it's time to get a new phone or upgrade? "Many people have sold their crystallized phones on eBay for a profit. Crystallizing your phone with genuine Swarovski crystals actually increases the value significantly", explains Ohtake. A Swarovski covered cell phone sells anywhere from $350 - $700 on eBay.

Although crystallizing cell phones has been the most popular, other crystal-clad gadgets include the iPod, Sidekick, BlackBerry, and even digital cameras.

Cell-phone owners express themselves with faceplates, adornments

Cell phones have become fashion accessories.

By simply adding a stylish faceplate or crystal embellishments, a plain-jane cell phone can become an object of glamour.

From Sarah Jessica Parker to Sean "Diddy" Combs, celebrities are getting glam with crystal-covered cell phones, according a news release from the Swarovski Crystal company. The pricey adornments can cost $350 to $700. "Girls want bling, bling, " said Pony Alford, manager of Global Cellular at Northgate Mall. "We have rhinestone kits that allow them to make their own designs on their phones.". The kits cost about $15. But it's not just women who are adding style their phones. Mr. Alford said about 60 percent of his faceplate sales are to males ages 16 to 25. "Though I have customers of all ages buying the phone accessories, it's mostly teenagers and young adults who purchase the faceplates and crystal accessories," he said.

Soddy-Daisy High School senior Jacob Wright, 18, said he's been buying the interchangeable face plates since he first got a cell phone on his 16 birthday. He prefers a bright red plate because it matches his car and truck, he said.

Charles Stolz, 17, a junior at Hixson High School, said he tries to buy a new faceplate every week.

"I like the way they look," he said. "Most of my friends buy them, too." "A faceplate gives a phone an identity " Mr. Alford said. "Otherwise, most phones look pretty much alike." ...

The kits range from $38 to $97. Mr. Alford said topping the local most-wanted list are Tennessee Vols faceplates, all brightly-colored plates, and plates with animals.

"I love the faceplates for my phone," said Allison Smith, 18, a senior at Notre Dame High School. "I've decorated my phone with rhinestones, and I've had several faceplates. I think they make a phone look cool."
